Nigerian Content in Shipping

The Bonny Gas Transport (BGT), our shipping subsidiary, is at the centre of our efforts to enhance Nigerian ownership and participation in NLNG shipping operations.

Through the BGT Plus Project, six state-of-the-art Dual Fuel Diesel Electric (DFDE) LNG carriers were built, significantly boosting Nigeria’s stake in NLNG’s shipping fleet.

Local Workforce Integration:
Qualified Nigerians joined the construction teams at shipyards, gaining hands-on experience.
Ship Repair Yard Feasibility Study:
We commissioned a feasibility study for a ship repair yard in Nigeria to service large vessels, with potential sites in Onne, Bonny, and Lagos.
Maritime Centre of Excellence:
The Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE) on Bonny Island delivers cutting-edge marine and technical shipping services locally.

Training and Skills Development

Through the BGT Plus Project, we’ve invested in world-class training programs to build local expertise in shipbuilding, welding, and ship management, creating a pipeline of skilled professionals for Nigeria’s maritime industry.

Through the BGT Plus Project, six state-of-the-art Dual Fuel Diesel Electric (DFDE) LNG carriers were built, significantly boosting Nigeria’s stake in NLNG’s shipping fleet.

DFDE Shipbuilding Training
35 Nigerians trained in South Korea, with seven specializing in Ship Design at International Energy Services Limited (IESL) in Lagos.
Welding Training
Over 420 Nigerians received basic welding training at the Bonny Vocational Centre (BVC) in partnership with Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries. After the completion of the programme facilities were handed over to BVC to continue advanced training for more Nigerians.
Ship Management Knowledge Transfer
Through the Ship Management Knowledge Transfer Project (SMKTP), we transitioned expertise from Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited (STASCo) to NLNG Ship Management Limited (NSML), now a leading provider of ship management services both locally and internationally.

Vendor Financing and Procurement

At NLNG, we’re committed to strengthening Nigeria’s economy by empowering local businesses. Through the $1.2 billion NLNG Local Vendors Financing Scheme (NLVFS), we provide competitive financing options to Nigerian vendors, enabling them to compete globally while maintaining international standards of quality, cost, and safety.

Our initiatives to support Nigerian service providers include:

Marine Operations Contract
Two Nigerian companies have been awarded key contracts, managing NLNG’s Marine Operations Strategy, which includes the local assembly of boats using Nigerian materials and resources.
Partnerships for Growth
Collaborations between established and community-based vendors, like SJ Abed and Vikal Nigeria Enterprise, are building a stronger vendor ecosystem.
Boosting Local Spend
Our focus on local procurement has led to a significant year-on-year increase in contracts awarded to community vendors, driving economic growth in the region.
Capacity Building
54 community vendors have been trained in business development and project management at the Bonny Vocational Centre (BVC), equipping them to take on larger, more complex projects.
Finima Legacy Project
11 host community-based contractors expanded their operating capacity through capital investment.
Research and Development
NLNG recognizes the importance of research and development (R&D) in sustaining industry growth. Through its University Support Programme (USP), over $12 million was invested in six universities to build modern engineering laboratories, fostering R&D and innovation.
