NLNG USP Programme Laboratory Commissioning at University of Maiduguri

NLNG University Support Programme

NLNG University Support Programme was driven by Nigeria LNG Limited to develop engineering education in the country, in line with the company’s vision to help build a better Nigeria.

NLNG spent N340 million ($2 million) each on the construction of modern engineering laboratories, equipped with the cutting-edge equipment in University Of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, University of Port-Harcourt, University of Maiduguri, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

The six universities were selected based on rankings by the National Universities Commission (NUC), other international bodies, as well as long standing contributions to the development of local capacity in Nigeria and their out-standing performance within each of the six geopolitical zones in the country, especially in the area of engineering and technical education and the grooming of notable engineering luminaries who have contributed to national development.

On June 20, 2014, NLNG and the six universities signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), flagging off the implementation phase.

In implementing the project, NLNG adopted an approach that zeroes down on the comparative advantages and peculiarities of each university. Disbursement of funds from NLNG commenced in 2014 and will be completed in 2016. The universities are procuring equipment from original equipment manufacturers (OEM) or registered agents, and construction have reached advance stage, where the construction of building is involved, by secured contractors.

On the 21st of November 2015, Ahmadu Bello University successfully commissioned their Multi-User Laboratory, becoming the first of 6 (six) of the USP projects to go live. The University of Ibadan and University of Port Harcourt respectively commissioned the NLNG/UI Engineering Complex and the NLNG Centre for Gas, Refining and Petrochemical Engineering on the 21st of March 2016 and the 1st of April 2016.

On July 8, 2016, University of Ilorin opened its NLNG Engineering Research Centre while NLNG/University of Nigeria, Nsukka Engineering Laboratory was commissioned on November 29, 2016.  The University of Maiduguri project , the sixth university, was commissioned in December 2016.
