THE NIGERIA PRIZE FOR SCIENCE AND LITERATURE
History
The Nigeria Prize for Literature and The Nigeria Prize for Science are part of Nigeria LNG Limited’s Corporate Social Responsibility programmes. The initiative for these prizes is predicated on our understanding that the first principle of successful community relations is adopting the mindset that the company is a citizen of the community it does business in, albeit a corporate citizen, and has basic rights and obligations to that community.
Therefore, on February 9, 2004, following exploratory meetings with stakeholders in science and literature, The Nigeria Prize for Literature and The Nigeria Prize for Science were formally inaugurated by the then Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Andrew Jamieson. The ceremony held at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The case for Science
Creating awareness, stimulating competition, rewarding and recognizing excellence in science and technology will not only ensure that Nigeria joins the ranks of developed nations but ably provides meaningful existence for the citizenry.
Greater recognition for science and scientists will also provide leaders with answers to critical issues such as food shortages, fuel shortages, electoral malpractice, poverty, health and environment, and expand the awareness of present realities and future possibilities.
The case for Literature
It is hoped that this prize will improve the quality of writing, editing, proof reading, and publishing in the country with spill over effects in newspapers, magazines and broadcasting.
Promoting writers is certainly a way of promoting writing, literacy and good reading culture among Nigerians.
“Our vision is to ensure that no scientist or writer is viewed with scorn and that those who aim at excellence in these fields will live and work with dignity, with a sense of self-esteem and confidence in their future.”

Siene Allwell-Brown, General Manager, External Relations

“By instituting a significant prize for science, NLNG seeks to bring science and scientists to public attention, rescue science from its current doldrums and avail the nation of its immense benefits.”

Andrew Jamieson, former Managing Director and CEO,
Nigeria LNG Limited

“The aim of promoting The Nigeria Prize for Science and The Nigeria Prize for Literature is to stimulate authorship and scientific thinking, reward creativity and bring Nigerian writers and scientists to public attention.
Nigeria LNG Limited embarked on this project with the firm conviction that greater recognition for science will provide leaders with answers to crucial national issues and bring about improvements in our living standards.”

Chris Haynes, Managing Director and CEO,
Nigeria LNG Limited
