NLNG Signs Agreement with Bonny Kingdom
Nigeria LNG Limited today signed an agreement in Government House Port Harcourt, Rivers State with the Bonny Kingdom whereby NLNG and the Bonny Community will fulfil their obligation to each other in order that NLNG can carry out its operations in a conducive environment.
The agreement is a climax of negotiations that began in September 1999, after protests by the Community. In order to help resolve matters the Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili has set up a panel under the chairmanship of his deputy, Sir Gabriel Toby to meet with representatives of Bonny Kingdom and Nigeria LNG with a view to reconciling their differences, and ensuring that a long lasting relationship is established between both parties.
Main points of the agreement include:
- Employment at NLNG and with it’s sub-contractors.
- Community support covering water transport, health centres and roads.
- Finima relocation issues.
- Environmental Impact Assessment for Train 3 including fish catch.
Nigeria LNG’s Managing Director, Mr Andrew Jamieson commended the efforts of the negotiating teams and expressed appreciation to the Governor of Rivers State, Dr Peter Odili for setting up the panel. He also thanked the Deputy Governor for the patience and wisdom he demonstrated in handling the negotiations between NLNG and the Bonny Community.
