Nigeria LNG Plant Shutdown (Statement II)
Management of Nigeria LNG Limited confirms that the Gas Liquefaction Plant in Bonny Island has been shut down.
The systematic shutdown of the plant commenced at about 9.00 a.m. September 23 1999, following continued occupation of access road and other outlying facilities by the demonstrators.
Prior to shutdown, the plant was producing 6000 tonnes of LNG per day into storage to meet the October 1 date scheduled for export of the first LNG cargo. Consequently, the company is not likely to meet the October 1 export date.
As soon as law and order is restored on the Island, and free movement around our facilities is guaranteed by the Federal and State authorities, we shall go out to assess the extent of damage done to some of our outlying facilities.
At this stage, it is not possible to determine a date for restart of the plant for production and build up on LNG in our tanks to a quantity enough to load our vessel for export to commence.
